Turns out there's no need for concern, according to Glen Ellyn police and the DuPage Country Forest Preserve. The condition is known as fish kill  and is fairly common this time of year.

According to the release, the fish died of oxygen depletion in the shallow pond due to the heavy snowfall the area has received this winter. When snow covers the ice, sunlight cant get to plants in the pond, causing a reduction in the oxygen supply for fish. Fish use up the available oxygen and then suffocate, causing thousands to float to the surface when the ice melts.
