Some residents here are planning to light luminaries nightly through Christmas to show support for those who lost loved ones in Newtown, CT.

What began as an e-mail among friends has some Glen Ellyn neighbors hoping residents here will band together to show support for those hurting thousands of miles away.

A group of Glen Ellyn friends and neighbors have vowed that they will put out luminaries on their front walks or porches nightly through Christmas as a way to support those who lost a loved one in the tragic school shooting in Newtown, CT.

Residents around the Chicago area, from Oak Park to Glen Ellyn, are lighting candles in solidarity with those in Newtown.

An e-mail forwarded to Glen Ellyn Patch from resident Carrie Gowans seeks support for the effort in the hopes of having more residents here make the simple step of lighting a candle.

In the original e-mail, an Oak Park resident wrote to her friends:

“I thought it would possibly feel like I had something tangible to do. And I feel like it may help our children by having a clear, beautiful symbol in remembrance of the children and adults who were taken from us.”
