Author Judy Blume Speaks Out Against 'Perks' Ban at District 41

Author Judy Blume donated prize money she received over the weekend to support the National Coalition Against Censorship.

In town to promote the opening of the movie Tiger Eyes and to speak at the Printers Row Lit Fest, author Judy Blume spoke out against District 41’s efforts to ban The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Blume offered support for the book after middle school students approached her at a local film screening, asking her to say a few words for a short video, the Chicago Tribune reported. She was in Downers Grove at the Tivoli Theatre on June 8 for a movie screening and discussion.

Blume’s books, including Tiger Eyes, have also been censored and challenged. She addressed the Glen Ellyn District 41 controversy while speaking at Lit Fest, the Tribune said. At the event, Blume received the Tribune’s Young Adult Literary Prize. She said she would donate the $5,000 award to the National Coalition Against Censorship, which is fighting the book’s removal.
