Trinity Lutheran Students Share Warmth and Love at Christmastime

Children Welcome Seniors to Lunch, Make Blankets for Lexington Hospice

Students at Trinity Lutheran School in Lombard may have shivered on their way to school last Tuesday in the below freezing temperatures but their focus was on the warm blankets they would make for hospice residents at Lexington Health Center.  The blanket-making took place at the Lombard school during the annual Senior Luncheon, at which the grade school welcomed senior citizens from student families and from Trinity Lutheran Church.   

Trinity’s teachers organized and parents served a hot pasta and salad lunch, while the faculty coordinated the construction of colorful fleece blankets by students and guests. The supplies for the day were donated by the school’s Parenting with the Lord group.

Mrs. Sue Niehaus’ 5th and 6th grade class was particularly enthusiastic about the project. Angelina, a 5th grader from Glendale Heights, worked together with her great-grandparents on one of the blankets. She said, “God wants us to be nice to other people and it was fun to make a blanket with my great grandma and great grandpa.” 5th grade cousins Sara and Connor had grandparents from both sides of their families participating with them in the project.  Connor explained that God desires us to reach out to people who are in need, whether they are poor, homeless, or lonely. “These blankets are to help people who are sick,” added Sara.  6th grader Nancy chimed in that, “We made the blankets from our heart to share with others,” and 5th grader Virginia declared that the project was fun because, “We are making a small change in the world and we know it!” 

“It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time with the children, sing some Christmas songs, and help make the blankets for Lexington’s hospice residents,” enthused Sherron Schiewe, a member of Trinity who attended the event with her husband Paul Koslowski.  “We enjoyed it very much and appreciated the invitation from the students.”

Principal Kenn Krohse related how the project came about, “One of our 8th grade parents, Kelly Wilson, works with the hospice division at Lexington Health Network.  When we became aware of the need for blankets and lap robes, we decided that was a need we could fill.”  Lexington Volunteer Manager Annice Kennedy-Hanlon made a trip to Trinity on Friday to receive the brightly patterned blankets to share with patients served by Lexington. 

This project was a perfect fit for Trinity’s school year theme, ‘Love one another,’ added Krohse.  The overall consensus was that the multi-generational interaction and the sharing of the labor of one’s hands was a fun and meaningful way to illustrate the Biblical principle.

Teacher aide Beth Kraegel summed up the overall response to the school’s Senior Luncheon and blanket making day, “It was a great day and a lot of fun…a good time was had by all.”
