Think Energy Program Presented at Glen Crest

Tuesday, January 28, two morning sessions, 8:15 to 9:15 AM, and 9:30 to 10:30 AM, titled “Think Energy,” are planned for the entire sixth grade science classes at Glen Crest Middle School.  Sixth grade science teachers, Suzanne Hood and Denise Olton applied to Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program and Common Wealth Edison Smart Ideas Elementary Energy Education Program for a full morning time slot that featured  these two presentations.  Hood filled out an application online to the National Energy Foundation.  The application was accepted and two programs were scheduled.
Nicor Gas and Commonwealth Edison energy efficiency experts spend 45 minutes to an hour teachinng students about energy and the importance of saving natural gas, electricity and water resources at home and shool.  Interactive lessons include a teachers’s guide, posters and educational energy games.
One of the key components of Think! Energy! is optional homework.  The ECO Pulse survey of Americans’ views on green products reports that 71 % of kids who talked to their parents about environmental issues influenced behavior changes at home.
Each student receives free energy conservation kits that include a high-efficiency shower head, shower timer, kitchen and bathroom aerators and a digital thermometer to make their household more energy efficient.  Students and teachers, in this jointly-funded program with Nicor and Com Ed, will also receive three compact flourescent light bulbs (CFLs).
Students will work with parents or guardians to install the items, complete an energy activity book and document how simple, low-cost efficieny measures will result in energy saving.
Families are asked to complete a household report card.  Students who return completed report cards tro their teachers can help their classrooms receive up to a $100 mini-grant.
For more information about these very important science presentations that apply directly to some of the state-goals core-curriculum, call Hood at the Glen Crest office, 630-469-5220.
