Illinois Concealed Carry - What does it all mean?!

What would you do if… you were walking through an alley and someone held you at knifepoint to steal your wallet or purse, broke into your home, or even worse…your child was in danger of a predator creeping through your neighborhood?

Do you know how you would react in these types of situations? Most people really would not be able to answer this question. When our adrenaline is flowing and thoughts are running wild our first instinct is to protect ourselves and our loved ones in any way possible.

There is no training that is required to obtain a FOID card in Illinois. However, the Illinois State Police does require a 16 hour concealed carry course in order to apply for a concealed carry permit. Many say that the sixteen hour course is just a way to prolong obtaining a Concealed Carry permit. Others believe that 16 hours is just not enough.  There will always be argument regarding this topic and it will always remain controversial.

Whatever the case may be, the Concealed Carry permit is there to help private citizens protect themselves and/or their family, friends, etc. The permit does not give citizens the right to become a vigilante and seek out dangerous criminals. It does not give anyone the right to shoot at anything, anytime they are in a potentially dangerous situation. Most importantly, possessing a Concealed Carry permit does not give any private citizen the right to assume the same authority of a highly trained Law Enforcement Officer. Law Enforcement is trained to secure and contain the situation while a concealed carry permit means a private citizen has the ability to protect themselves and should avoid/move away from danger immediately.

No private citizen should knowingly place themselves within immediate danger.

Granite Security Services Inc.‘s concealed carry class takes a different approach when it comes to their 16 hour Illinois Concealed Carry class by going deeper into topics such as:

  • Scenarios in which deadly force may be used
  • What will happen after deadly force has been used
  • How to interact with Law Enforcement
  • Civil Litigation – Not “what if” but “when”
  • Ownership, storage and transportation of a firearm
  • Illinois Concealed Carry laws and regulations

G.S.S.I is owned and operated by highly trained Law Enforcement Officers and Military Veterans.  In addition, all instructors are either off-duty or retired Law Enforcement Officers.  Citizens are able to learn first-hand from law enforcement officers what many classes can not offer.  In addition, the level of technical expertise goes above and beyond any expectations when it comes to firearms.  You can learn more about the owners of Granite Security Services Inc. and their extensive experience on their bio page: Owner Bio’s

Many students have asked us about advanced concealed carry training and G.S.SI. has listened.  We will be offering such classes in the near future for students who have completed the course.  As details become available, we will provide information on our website.

As a reminder, the right to carry concealed is a privilege.  We must remember to be responsible, avoid social conflicts and potentially dangerous situations.  If a conflict happens to find you, the best thing you could do is avoid saying or doing anything that could escalate the situation.  Carrying a firearm on your person doesn’t mean going around acting like “Billy Bad Ass”  and flashing your weapon.  It means keep a low profile and back off….. or the person that could be in serious trouble here, in Illinois, is you.
