Surveying all the students at Glen Crest Middle School to find out what charity they would like to support, was a mammoth job for the Glen Crest Student Union.  When the results were in, the Student Union discovered that the Chicago area Red Cross was by far
the favorite social service their classmates wanted to support.  The first majpr project that
involved the entire student body was collecting donations at the Friday, January 31, Faculty Student Basketball Game.  To make the audience at the games more enthusiastic about donating money, the Student Union developed the idea of a Glen Crest Cookbook.
As an incentive to donate, a free cookbook was given to the donator. The title is “We Can ‘Meat’ the Challenge.”  Recipes  were collected from the Student Union representatives’ families , teachers,  and friends.  A committee of eight put the book together and printed it out as a “Thank You” for donations at the game.   Since then, the project has grown and if anyone would like a, “We Can ‘Meat” the Challenge,” book, call the Glen Crest office at 630-469-5220 and pledge a donation to the Red Cross.  The book will be at the office waiting when  a donation is delivered.   So far $300 has been collected in one week.
February 7 and 8, the Union representatives coordinated the Have-A-Heart Campaign.  Each grade level was given a designated color: 6th grade pink, 7th grade white, 8th grade red.  The purchased hearts are  hung in the Commons lunch area so students can see what grade level has purchased the most hearts.
Future plans include “Make A Change,  a loose change drive for the month of March and a movie night takes place in April.  The goal is to raise a substantial amount of money by the month of May when the Glen Crest Student Union donation will be sent to the Chicago Red Cross.  For information about the project call the Glen Crest office at 630-469-5220.
