Glen Crest 6th Graders Learn 3 T’s of Energy - Think, Talk, Take Action!

Glen Crest 6th Graders Learn 3 T’s of Energy - Think, Talk Take Action!

On Friday, February 21, Glen Crest Middle School 6th grade science students welcomed two Classroom Presenters from the National Energy Foundation located in  St. Joseph, Michigan.  Tammi Phillippe and John Cayo traveled to the middle school to educate and instruct students about saving our natural resources in their homes and lives.  The Presenters came to Glen Crest through the sponsorship of Commonwealth Edison Electric Company and Nicor Gas Company.  Sixth grade science teachers, Suzanne Hood and Denise Olton applied to Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program and Common Wealth Edison Smart Ideas Elementary Energy Education Program for a full morning time slot that featured  these two programs.
Phillippe and Cayo  spent an hour with the two science sections, teaching students about energy and the importance of saving natural gas, electricity and water resources at home. “Lingo Boards,” were distributed and each student got to participate in the Lingo Game with the Presenters and the Power Point program that accompanied this activity.
One of the key components of Think! Energy! is optional homework.  The ECO Pulse survey of Americans’ views on green products reports that 71 % of kids who talked to their parents about environmental issues influenced behavior changes at home.
Each student received free energy conservation kits that included a high-efficiency shower head, shower timer, kitchen and bathroom aerators and a digital thermometer to make their household more energy efficient.  Students and teachers, in this jointly-funded program with Nicor and Com Ed,  also received three compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).
Students are to  work with parents or guardians to install the items, complete an energy activity book and keep track of  how simple, low-cost efficiency measures will result in energy saving.
Families were asked to complete a household report card.  Students who return completed report cards tro their teachers can help their classrooms receive up to a $100 mini-grant.
