Bowling for the Troops; Blue Star Museum Program and a 'Next to Normal' Play

A look at some of the events and programs happening around the area.

Bowl for a soldiers and their pets: The Puppy Rescue Mission, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization that helps U.S. troops bring home dogs and cats they adopt while serving overseas will hold a Battle Buddy Bowling event Aug. 18 at Fox Bowl in Wheaton. The event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. and will help raise funds for the organization. The pets are “battle buddies” who provide physical protection and emotional comfort to their troops in war zones, according to the organization. Blue Star Museum Program at Stacy’s Tavern:Active duty military personnel and their families will be able to visit the museum, one of 1,800 participating, from Aug. 18 to Sept. 25 as part of the Blue Star Museum Program.

The Glen Ellyn Historical Society’s military related collection includes a unique World War I flag created by the Glen Ellyn Women’s Club that honors local WWI veterans, commemorative ribbons from local Grand Army of the Republic members who served in the Civil War, and military uniforms, according to the organization. Guests of the Stacy’s Tavern Museum are invited to view the World War I flag that will be on display. Stacy’s Tavern Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was the boyhood home of Philo Stacy. Philo Stacy served in the Civil War and hosted the gathering of GAR members following the war in his own home on Main Street.
