A law that would end Illinois' status as the last state in the nation without concealed-carry provisions passed the House with enough votes to override a likely veto.
By an 85-30 vote, the Illinois House moved on Friday to approve a law allowing certified residents to carry concealed firearms, which would end Illinois' status as the only state in the nation to completely prohibit carrying guns in public. Dozens rallied along Butterfield Road on Tuesday following revelations that the Internal Revenue Service placed additional scrutiny on the tea party and other conservative groups.
Dozens of tea party activists rallied outside the Internal Revenue Service office in Downers Grove on Tuesday to protest the tax agency's improper targeting of conservative groups. The crowd stood along Butterfield Road, just outside the Esplanade office building, for more than an hour, waving "Don't Tread on Me" flags and chanting anti-IRS slogans. Some activists held signs calling for the IRS to be abolished and likened the agency's actions to Nazi Germany. The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide high school arts competition sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives. The winner, a Palatine High School senior, will have her artwork displayed in the U.S. capitol.
On Saturday, May 18, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth announced the winners of the 8th Congressional District Art Competition at a Reception in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The competition was open to all high school students living in the 8th congressional district, and students were made aware of the contest by their art teachers. The theme was to depict "nature in the modern world." "I was interested in showcasing how we can have both nature and progress-if we approach the two in a responsible way," Duckworth said during the presentation ceremony Saturday.
