 f Branch&nbsp\;member Helen Westlake. Don was a basic researcher in mate
 rials science at Argonne&nbsp\;National Laboratory. He authored or co-au
 thored more than 120 papers published in&nbsp\;various scientific journa
 ls\, but he didn't write poetry until he retired in 1984. Initially\, hi
 s&nbsp\;poems were an attempt to tell the story of growing up in a tiny 
 village (Elburn\, Illinois)&nbsp\;during the Great Depression\, but his 
 writing evolved to cover diverse subjects. His&nbsp\;poems are sometimes
  funny\, sometimes sad\, but always simple\, and always seeking to&nbsp\
 ;connect with the listener.
