Glen Ellyn's Breun Family is finally headed home today, after the city they were living in in Japan was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11. Patty and her son's, Drew and Ben, made it to South Korea recently and are now headed back to the U.S. today, according to their Facebook page.  Two years ago, Patty and her sons moved to Japan when she got an opportunity to teach English. GingerMovie, a user on YouTube, posted this video March 15. Titled, Glen Ellyn Cool Cities - The Time is Now, it features Glen Ellyn residents talking about why they believe Glen Ellyn should become a part of the Cool Cities movement. From small business owners to high school kids, it highlights people who are doing amazing things around town and helping to make Glen Ellyn a better place. Take a look. What do you think about it?
The Village of Glen Ellyn is one of 58 communities in Chicago who will be getting a little extra help with their bug problem. The program will help replace trees infested with the Emerald Ash Borer and plant news trees in their place. Triblocal reports the village will get an additional $20,000 for its tree replacement program. See the full story on Triblocal here.
Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill) recently posted an Op-Ed piece on the TheHill.com. In the piece, Roskam argues that the United States needs an "comprehensive fundamental tax reform overhaul." Glen Ellyn News published an editorial column on Feb. 23 telling village trustees to stop talking and get voting on the proposed ethics ordinance already.  Here's a quote from the column: "They either have one stupendous law planned that binds them to a strict set of ethical regulations, or they can’t bring themselves to seal the deal. We strongly suspect it’s the latter. Two years is a long time to dither about an ethics bill. Community Bank's Parent Company Will Discontinue Dividend Payments Chicago Business reports that the parent company of Community Bank-Wheaton/Glen Ellyn—Community Financial Shares Inc.—will halt dividend payments to the federal government under the bank bailout program next month.  Community Financial Shares Inc., the $333-million-asset holding company based in Glen Ellyn, will discontinuing paying dividends “for an indefinite period of time” on $7 million in preferred shares held by the Treasury Department under the Troubled Asset Relief Program.
