A very curious email arrived from my IL Sixth District Congressman Peter Roskam Sunday. It was titled: "Looking back: jobs down, poverty up over last 4 years".
What was curious and stunning, was that Congressman Roskam even mentioned the word "poverty". He was in Congress for the last two years of the Bush administration which saw the policies that Roskam champions, trillions in tax cuts the the wealthiest Americans and gutting sensible financial regulations, brought America to the brink of another Great Depression. Roskam watched silently as 700,000 jobs were being shed monthly under Bush without ever mentioning the word poverty. His focus remained, as it always has, on additional largess for his base, the "Have Mores".
As House Chief Majority Deputy Whip, Roskam banded with the Tea Party faction and the House Leadership to bloc every sensible measure to improve the economy for those millions of folks slipping into poverty to realize their primary goal of making President Obama a one term president.
In his 2008 election, a wily Roskam, seeing the groundswell of support for Barack Obama to replace the man who implemented Roskam's policies to catastrophic effect, trotted out an ad highlighting Obama supporters who were inexplicably also supporting Roskam. For the 2012 election, Roskam, attempting to distance himself from the heartless Tea Party folks who zealously seek removal of virtually all government help for those in poverty, has had an epiphany. Nine days before the election, Congressman Peter Roskam wants us all to know that there is poverty in America and he has a plan to eradicate it. Oh yes, it involves removal of sensible governmental regulation....and more tax cuts for those who couldn't see poverty with a telescope.

Walt is right on target with his assessment of Roskam's revelation that there is poverty in America; actually, it's right in Roskam's own Dist. 6 backyard.

Walt- you claim to be interested in fairness and justice. I'm curious as to why you have provided nothing on the Benghazi issue, which is looking more and more like a cover-up. You're more than happy to call out the perceived injustices of the Republican Party, while consistenly ignoring the missteps of the left.
I'm also curious as to how you think increased government spending will create jobs.
You never spoke about how Obama said that Obamacare wasn't a tax, only to be confirmed by the Supreme Court as a tax, which is the only way it could exist- a clear lie by Obama.
Are you aware of the doctors that are going to be put out of work, and the lower level of care that we will receive under Obamacare? Probably not.
And of defense cuts- I agree that they need to be made, but it needs to be a slower process. Are you aware that 70% of all defense dollars trickle down to small business? How do you think the layoffs of hundreds of thousands of workers and people losing their businesses will effect the economy?
What about stimulus money and the actual cost of creating jobs? What about Solyndra and other "green" endeavors gone awry?
Anything, Walt?

@ Frank - last one first, Solyndra was fast tracked by the Bush administration, Wall Street Journal articles from 2008 confirm Solyndra was a good bet, they didn't foresee China dumping solar panels in the US to drive US manufacturers out of business. Stimulus - the CBO syas it saved and/or created 3 million jobs, 35% of the bill was actually tax cuts targeted at the bottom 95% of Americans & small businesses. Defense Dollars - close most of the 1000 or so bases we have overseas, bring those personnel home, fire all the contractors (most of whom are from foreign countries) - would that hurt US based small businesses? The SCOTUS chose to interperet the "penalty" in the Affordable Care Act as a tax, not Obama. Increased government spending = jobs - didn't you JUST WRITE about 70% of defense dollars trickle down to small businesses - does that NOT create jobs? That percentage is much higher for infrastructure projects & hiring teachers, police & first responders. Benghazi is actually looking less & less like a coverup - unless if you're a FOX viewer, then you actually know less than someone who doesn't watch news programs at all. I have followed Walt Z's letters for several years - he is as consistent about pointing out Obama & Democratic missteps as he is Republican ones, it's just that Republicans mess up much more.
