Glen Ellyn resident Serena Harnack is a freshman at St. Francis High School. At age 14, the violinist is already known in the area for her triumphs in one competition after another. In a recent feature in in the Daily Herald, Harnack talked about her experience, the work she puts into perfecting her talent and her aspirations for the future. According to the Herald, Harnack this year won Northern Illinois University's CSA Sinfonia Concerto Competition, the Young Artists Auditions for the DuPage Symphony Orchestra, took fourth in the Robert Stanger Young Artist Auditions for Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra and received honorable mention in the final round of the West Suburban Symphony's Solo Competition. Students in the Hadley Junior High theatre arts program will perform "Honk!", a musical adaptation of "The Ugly Duckling" this weekend.
More than 100 Hadley Junior High School Students are about to open the curtains on Honk!, a musical adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story The Ugly Duckling—a story about tolerance and appeals to all ages. The sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade performers have been at work on the play since December, according to a news release from the Hadley theatre arts program. An army of volunteers including set designers, production teams and backstage hands helped in the effort. The play features musical numbers and a "poignant" story, all backed by a profession-grade sound, lighting and staging system. “The production has come together beautifully,” Kim Sirvatka, co-musical director of the production and professional vocal coach said in a …

Emmy-award winning actor and Glen Ellyn native Sean Hayes will guest star in the NBC series, Smash, Tuesday night. Smash is a musical comedy about the Broadway theater scene and a team of producers, directors and actors tackling show business obstacles to make their musical "Bombshell" a "smash." Hayes, 43, grew up in Glen Ellyn and attended Glenbard West High School. He co-starred with Smash star Debra Messing in NBC's Will & Grace from 1998 to 2006 as Jack McFarland. He won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2000 and was nominated for the award from 2001 to 2006. The Village Theatre Guild is hosting auditions for it's upcoming play "Next Fall" on March 24 and 25.
Local thespians ready to take to the stage, here is your chance to prepare for auditions being held in late March. The Village Theatre Guild is holding open auditions on March 24 and 25 for Next Fall by Geoffrey Nauffts. The play will run from May 24 through June 15 at the Village Theatre Guild in Glen Ellyn. The theater is casting for six parts. The parts are as follows: Adam (early to mid 40s), Luke (mid to late 20s), Holly (mid 30s), Brandon (early to mid 30s), Arlene (early 50s) and Butch (mid 50s). Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script and will be held at 7 p.m. March 24 and 25, according to the theater. Prepared monologues will be heard, but are not required. If you planned to attend the “Letters of the Civil War” performance at the Glen Ellyn Historical Society on Jan. 27, but the weather or other things kept you from attending, you have another chance to see the program. The Glen Ellyn Historical Society cancelled the program and rescheduled it due to the inclement weather. The event is now set for Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. "Letters of the Civil War," is a 60-minute performance with period attired Civil War actors dramatically interpreting more than 30 original letters from the war.
