West Chicago Mayor Suffers Heart Attack

Mike Kwasman is undergoing treatment at Central DuPage Hospital.

The mayor of West Chicago suffered a heart attack on Saturday, the city announced late Saturday afternoon.

Mike Kwasman is in treatment at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. No other details have been released, including his specific medical condition.

The brief press release from the City of West Chicago did not specify what time Kwasman suffered the heart attack.

A Cadence spokesman confirmed to Patch that Kwasman was admitted to Central DuPage Hospital. He deferred further comment to the mayor's office.

An e-mail sent on Saturday to the City of West Chicago's spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

About Kwasman

Kwasman has been West Chicago's mayor since April 2007, winning reelection in April 2009. Before that he was Alderman of West Chicago's Fifth Ward for six years, according to the City of West Chicago website.

Kwasman owns and manages his own business. He has been a West Chicago resident for 23 years, the city's website said.

With the passing of West Chicago's Mayor Mike Kwasman http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20120417/news/704179666/ our community (not just West Chicago) lost a dedicated elected official and the environment lost a friend.

Many years ago when we started to expand the trail cleanups on the Great Western Trail and IL Prairie Path he was an Alderman in West Chicago. He would give us immediate feedback and provide the trail groups with important resources to haul away the amazing amount of trash we collect every year. As Mayor he also took action and directed an effort to help trail supporters fight Com Ed's butchering of the trees on the trails. He also lead the City of West Chicago to pass a resolution requesting the first ever public forum on tree maintenance which the Governor's office, ICC and DuPage County Chairman later supported.

My best wishes go out to his family, friends and coworkers.
