Trustees Cut Strict Tree Preservation Ordinance

Village trustees decided to nix the most stringent provision at Monday's village workshop.

After discussing possible changes to the , village trustees decided to nix the most stringent provision.

The clear cutting provision would have restricted residents who lived in Glen Ellyn for less than six months from tearing down any tree without informing officials of the tree removal.

"It's too easy to get around and will impact too many unintended people," Trustee Carl Henninger said of the clear cutting provision.

The provision was intended to slow developers from coming in and uprooting a lot, but the trustees felt that it would have negatively effected average residents who want to do work on their homes.

"We're going to catch up a whole bunch of people that we're not intending to catch up in this and for zero benefit on the other end," said Trustee Robert Friedberg.

The trustees also cut out an "above and beyond" plan that would have required residents to obtain a permit for removing healthy trees.

The village manager's base line plan was favored above the rest, which mainly helps streamline the current ordinance that was adopted in 1998.

There was no vote on the provisions at Monday's meeting since it was a village workshop. The trustees will wait to vote on the new ordinance at a later date.
