Trial Opens for Former Glenbard West Football Player

A former GBW student is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in 2010 before a car crash that severely injured him and killed a teammate.

A former Glenbard West High School football player raped and sodomized a 15-year-old girl he just met in a secluded Rolling Meadows parking lot in January 2010 before forcing the girl to perform oral sex on him as his football teammate drove them around in a car, Cook County prosecutors said this morning in opening statements trial.

The former player, Demarco Whitley, is charged with five counts of criminal sexual assault stemming from the incident that occurred when he was 18, just before he and his teammate, Pierre Washington-Steel, were in a crash that killed Steel. Whitley was seriously injured when the car struck a utility pole; Washington-Steel died a week later from injuries sustained in the crash.

Prosecutors said Whitley's DNA connects him to the attack, and that he admitted the girl said she did not want to have sex with either man. In February, the Cook County State's Attorney said police obtained a used condom from the scene and a ripped pair of nylons that contained Whitley's DNA. In March, Whitley pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Whitley's attorney countered that the meeting for sex was prearranged with Steel and the girl only claimed to have been raped out of guilt relating to her boyfriend.

The girl is expected to take the witness stand this afternoon.
