Readers React: Can Anything Be Done about Metra/BNSF Fatalities?
With three pedestrian fatalities in less than two weeks across a four-mile DuPage County stretch of the BNSF Railway, we wanted to know: how do we make it stop? Can we?
If you've noticed lately that Patch has been overrun with tragic stories about people being killed by trains along Metra's Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railway, it's not because we just started reporting them—it's because there have been three in the past two weeks within a span of just a few commuter stops.
First, it happened in Westmont on March 7, then in Hinsdale on March 18 and in Downers Grove on March 19. All three incidents involved a single person; all three were fatal, all three are still under investigation and none have been officially established as accidents or self-inflicted.
We wondered if our readers had any idea how to make this terrible streak go away, and how to help ensure these things happen as infrequently as possible. Read some of what we got back from our Facebook followers below:
--
"I guess it depends on where the fatalities are happening along the tracks. Is it ignorance? Is it a dangerous crossing that needs to be addressed? Things like bridges and underpasses only go so far to fixing the problem. Here in Winfield, we have an underpass, yet 99% of the people I see get off the train don't use it, and instead walk across the street crossing, some of them ducking under the arms. There really is only so much that can be done. The rest is up to the individual."
— Deanna Jones Mustafa, Wheaton Patch Faceook
"These all seem to be purposeful on the part of the deceased, and I can't even begin to imagine what any railroad can do to stop something like that. What we can do is continue to work hard to remind people that no matter how difficult they think their current situation is, there is loving help available! You do not need to resort to inflicting that kind of pain on your family or friends... please consider the agony this causes for the engineer of the train, the police officers and the paramedics who get the call, and the unintended witnesses who might happen to be in the area."
— Karen Sherman Bushy, Downers Grove Patch Facebook
"Nothing can be done if they're purposely going on there to end their life. Anyone else it happens too just needs to slow down and not be in a hurry., pay clear attention without distractions(phones, text, music, etc..) Follow the rules. Nothing worth the risk! Like we were taught as kids..Stop, Look, Listen! If you see a train, don't cross. If you hear a train, don't cross! If gates are coming down, don't cross!"
— Dani Fish, Downers Grove Patch Facebook
"I regret when any negative/bad/sad news comes out of Downers Grove. But for the most part Downers Grove is a head of most of Illinois when it comes to public safety signs for rail road tracks, construction work sites, I currently in Ottawa, IL where not all railroad crossing sites have gates like they do in DG. As for people suffering from mental health issues there is many proper support groups and medical facilities in DuPage county. I know this is a no-brainer but safety signs around the train station the by-standers should beware of there soundings and not their mobile devices but the trains and cars."
— Earl M. Mcguire, Downers Grove Patch Facebook
"This is further proof of the lack of common sense people have today... commuter trains last all of a minute... when people think about racing that train to save that extra minute... perhaps their filter should consider the pain their families and friends will endure when they lose the race...as they usually do..."
— Nicky Weiner-Swank, Woodridge Patch Facebook
"For the riders who are in a hurry and are being careless, they need to slow down and be careful when they think of crossing the tracks. As for the people who turn to suicide, what could fellow commuters possibly do? How do you stop a complete stranger from doing this in the first place? There's no way to know they're going to do it until it's too late. And it's not Metra's fault either. Very sad."
— Carolyn Lundgren, Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Patch Facebook
"I don't think you can control people deciding "death by train" is a good option, but they can always reiterate the safety rules to the people outside the train. A lot of the time they are only broadcast to people on the train when there are plenty of people around that are not going onto a train. Also, all the signs and announcements are in English when there are plenty of people around the Western suburbs that speak Spanish, Polish, Japanese, and Chinese."
— Concetta Phillipps, Lisle Patch Facebook.
"Unfortunately, not much. If someone is determined enough to end their life, they will find a way. Diagnosing depression and mental illness and providing services to intervene early would help avoid this sad and tragic fate."
— Andre Wright, Glen Ellyn Patch Facebook.
"You have to change the fundamental nature of people to stop being selfish and / or stupid."
— Greg Uhlenhopp, Naperville Patch Facebook
"No standing at the platform until the train has stopped... Make more places to sit."
— Burnal Roy Hansen, Darien Patch Facebook.
"At this point, common sense seems to have been thrown out the window. Other than the inconvenience (of investigating the death and picking up pieces), I say let the stupid people just cull the herd and call it a day. You can't fix stupid. I don't even think more lights, more guard rails, or more awareness can fix this. And anything you could think of would just cost more money that there doesn't seem to be enough, and would only trickle down to Train Passengers to pay. As it is, people have had enough and are becoming desensitized."
— Rose Perez, Elmhurst Patch Facebook.
"My client witnessed the whole thing. The man stood there with his arms crossed waiting for the train. He obviously had a plan."
— Lisa Raciak, Lemont Patch Facebook.
"It's their own fault! Get off your phones, etc. and pay attention!"
— Staci Keebles, Lemont Patch Facebook.

This will be very hard to fix. Modern humans have become selfish creatures. They forgot that there is more to the world than what is in their Cloud. No matter how much "Operation Lifesaver" is promoted, it will only fall on deaf ears.

Put the BNSF owner/directors taped to the front of the train battering rams going to fast with sucky brakes and no steering in """THIS IS SAFE""" t-shirts. I betcha the proper video surveillance---track guards---pedestrian over/under passes of the rail-lock will magically appear.
Looking at the comments the railroads 160 year brainwash worked on most of these sheep.

Train accidents are a huge problem. For 7 year olds. Or for people in rural areas with no gates/lights. These are all suicides. The mundane mortgage-filled over-commuting existence finally drove them to jump in front of a train. Not much you can do about that without modifying what people perceive as "the American dream". Hint: "the dream" isn't for a dad to hop on a 5am train daily so his kid can wear juicy couture skirts & his wife can get an awesome facial every Tuesday @ noon.

I watch people make dangerous or "adventurous" decisions daily while driving. I learned a long time ago not to turn in front of a truck unless I had enough room...others? Act like the truck is miles away and just barely make it. I respect the size of a semi and the same goes with a train. I've been riding trains since I was a toddler, we'd take them in to the city, down to Springfield and even did a couple of trips on Amtrack. I was taught that because trains are so large, they can't stop quickly and they are going a lot faster then you would think. I watch people skip around downed gates because they don't want to wait and either don't know the illusion of speed(of the train) or think they're a super hero. How to combat this? How do you combat arrogance and stupidity?

I'm not sure how well it would work, but perhaps we could put some form of cow catcher on the trains. People in front of moving trains would probably still get killed but it might make the clean up a lot easier. If it means an hour stuck on a train rather than 3 hours it would be a big improvement.

I think most people are missing the point...... I can say that the situation of some of these people where not as selfless and clear cut as it appears. Our economy has changed..... Unfortunately, people who once never had a problem supporting there families are now faced with having to give up everything they worked so hard for. It's a tough environment. People are unable to get employment so they choose to take there life..... Why??? Because most life Insurance policies cover suicide after 24 months. I'm sure some of these people where helping there families. This is the sad reality!

I agree with Bam Bam. It is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate this new "progressive" world we are now living in. I have never had the stressors and worries that I currently have. I was always comfortable in my middle class status. However, now I am moving toward lower middle class or lower class and it is worrisome. The fees, taxes and surcharges on every single bill I receive is discouraging. I can't seem to put any money away. Every time I turn the TV on I am bombarded with talk of more taxes, rules, laws and regulations. It's disgusting that we have a politician who was against gay marriage until his son stepped out of the closet. Now he's pro gay marriage. These elected officials are the most self serving, amoral individuals ever! The American citizens are under attack and there is no end in sight. We have more people relying on "government" assistance than ever before. Sadly, we have more people who aren't smart enough to realize that the "government" is US......their neighbors, colleagues, friends, other family members. Every time I see a mini van mom driving around with her Obama bumper sticker, I have to laugh. I can't wait till her husband comes home telling her that his company will no longer insure her or the numerous kids she squeezed out. They must now go onto the "government" plan. Don't worry mini van mom, you can pick up the CHEAPEST plan at 20k. We will be just fine. Now everyone into the van for a trip to the soup kitchen!

Yes, people do step in front of trains as a means of committing suicide. Still, a lot of people are hit by trains out of stupidity. They often think that a train stopped at a station is holding the gates and walk around them, unaware that another train is coming on the middle track.
When I was in the 6th grade, a classmate of mine thought that was the case and rode her bike onto the tracks, unaware of an express train coming along on the middle track.
Or, a person is in a hurry and either drives around the gate or runs across the track, thinking he can beat the train.
Despite the best efforts of law enforcement and railroads, there will always be people who will take risks, because they think the consequence of being late outweighs the potential for being hit by a train traveling at a high rate of speed.

Mental health care in this country is shamefully behind the times. There is no decent affordable care for people suffering from depression and other mental health disorders. Depression is a horrible, debilitating disease and people who commit suicide feel they have no other option. I'm glad these poor souls are finally out of their pain. It is unfortunate that now their friends and family have to deal with a different pain, but that's what comes from lack of proper mental health care.

Bet the greedy low life railroads love the Mary ---heck they can payroll her under their hired gun to cover greedy low life rear branch. The country is rail-locked with no way to get around the tracks ---railroads do nothing to stop it or put in extra security which is MURDER by mental health infected railroad barons who think anybody gives a damn about how much of the $$$ they worship they have.
