Police: Freight Train Fatality Apparent Suicide

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train Wednesday night in Lombard.

Lombard police believe the 20-year-old female of Lombard that was killed after being committed suicide.

"It was not an accident," said Lombard Deputy Police Chief Pat Rollins. The DuPage County Coroner's Office confirmed the fatality but have not released the cause of death. 

The incident occurred at 10:45 p.m. at Finley Road and the tracks, said Rollins. Metra halted inbound and outbound trains following the incident, which caused extensive delays.

This is the second suicide in a month along the Union Pacific West line tracks near Glen Ellyn. In the middle of the day on April 3 in front of an outbound Metra train near downtown Glen Ellyn and was killed.

In March, a 52-year-old Wheaton man tried to kill himself by parking his Jeep Liberty on the Union Pacific West line tracks at College Avenue and Hill Street in Wheaton. A freight train struck, flipped his SUV but he survived the incident and was able to walk away from the scene. of property damage, reckless conduct and violation of the railroad obstruction act.
