The Village of Glen Ellyn announced that it will immediately put into effect a multipronged auditing system that will oversee the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company. 

Village staff, the fire company, and a private auditor will now be responsible for overseeing the financial records of the fire department.  

The new system was announced after David W. Garmoe, 54, of Glen Ellyn was arrested and charged Friday for stealing more than $260,000 from the fire company while he served as treasurer. 

In February 2011, officials with the fire company discovered the discrepancy in the fire company's bank account and an investigation revealed that Garmoe wrote unauthorized checks to himself and his business. 

Garmoe appeared in bond court Friday where the judge set bond at $500,000 with the condition that he turn over his passport to the Glen Ellyn Police Department and that he stay away from the premises of the Glen Ellyn fire company.
