Hey Mom and Dad: What Is Your New Year's Resolution For Your Family?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to Hey Mom and Dad—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting.

Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the western suburbs.

Each new year, people vow to make a fresh start for themselves or loved ones. With recent gun violence in the news, some parents have told us they plan to cut back on their kids' consumption of violent movies or video games. Others may want to eat more family dinners together or have their kids spend more time outside. This brings us to this week's question:

What New Year's resolution would you make for your family or kids this year?

Take a look at what Patch users throughout the western suburbs had to say and join the conversation in the comments section.

Doug Hafer: I will continue to teach my son to respect guns and continue to shoot with him. The problem is parenting, not guns. — Batavia Patch Facebook

Ross Gavino: Parents should look into martial arts training. Its a great way to keeps kids active and teaches kids respect and discipline! — Downers Grove Patch Facebook

Diane Morales: Live by the Golden Rule! — Geneva Patch Facebook

Cherie Jackson: More time together making meaningful memories. — Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Patch Facebook

Vikki Bradley Stella: To be more organized! — Naperville Patch Facebook

Tracy Ryder: In my small family of three, I've always made family a priority since it wasn't an option when I was a kid. We were left to take care of ourselves often in front of a tv with video games (nothing violent at least). My husband works a lot of late hours so it's just me and my daughter. We play games together, cook, shop and do volunteer things. Nothing will change for us except appreciate each other more. — St. Charles Patch Facebook

Mike Sakowicz: I Will be playing a lot more Call of duty on Xbox 360 and teaching my Children about gun safety as well as how to handle a firearm... i will not being sugar coating or hiding anything from them like the media wants... — Wheaton Patch Facebook

I look forward to getting my new FOID card so I can take my son hunting for the first time. I will not dress up as the Easter Bunny or Santa Clause when around children.

I would like to work on better time management since I'm expecting number 2, and I want to get the family to church a little more often.
