Glen Ellyn Shoppers — Watch Out for Added Credit Card 'Checkout Fee'
If you shop with a credit card, merchants and retailers can now charge you a 4 percent "checkout" fee in 40 states, including Illinois.
Illinois is one of 40 states where credit card users may now be charged a 4 percent checkout fee.

Glen Ellyn shoppers, beware: As of Sunday, anyone who pays with a credit card may be charged a new 4 percent added "checkout fee." The fee is legal in 40 states, including Illinois.
The fee is the result of a settlement announced last summer between credit card companies and major banks to "fix credit card processing fees with merchants."
Retailers can now charge credit card users 1.5 percent to 4 percent of their total bill to cover processing costs to credit card companies.
