Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

FOOTBALL: Glenbard West Hammers LT, 49-7

The Hilltoppers produced an avalanche of points Saturday afternoon, dominating the Lions with stingy defense and a running game that couldn't be stopped.

Breaking It Down: Glenbard West scored one minute and three seconds into the game against Lyons Township, on a blocked put that was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by Nick Garland. The block and score set the tone for a game that saw the Hilltoppers find the paint seven times against Lyons, including the touchdown on special teams and a score on defense as well.

The Lions had their chances but couldn't finish, as twice the Lions were at the 1-yard-line poised to score and twice Lyons players were stripped of the ball. The turnovers quickly turned into Glendbard West points, building to the 49-7 final.

Patch’s MVP: Joseph Zito, running back, Glenbard West. Bouncing back from a slight ankle injury, Zito showed no ill effects, rushing for 88 yards on 15 carries, with two touchdowns, leading the Hilltoppers in rushing for the game.

Glenbard West Stat Pack:
Scott Andrews rushed for 50 yards on six carries and had 2 touchdowns. Nick Garland recovered a fumble and blocked punt, which he recovered for a touchdown. Charlie Sweeney also recovered a fumble.

Lyons Stat Pack:
Zachary Mahoney finished with 280 yards passing and a touchdown, with 1 interception. The Lions' defense blocked a attempted field goal.

Quotable I:
“I've never been like that, in practice I'm always running down field if we get a pick, with the guy. Just trying to block for him and make sure no one touches him, to it worked. ” - Joe Marconi, defensive back, Glendbard West, on his fumble recovery touchdown, when he scooped up after teammate Nick Garland fumbled following his strip of Lyons quarterback Zachary Mahoney

Quotable II:
“Being physical down on the goal line, that's awesome. There's nothing that will take the wind out of somebody's sails like taking the ball away on the goal line.” - Coach Chad Hetlet, Glenbard West, on his defense's ability to force turnovers in the red zone.

Team Records:
Glenbard West improves to 3-0, 1-0 in the West Suburban Silver Conference. Lyons Township falls to 1-2, 0-1 in conference.
