District 87 Begins Process for Turf Installment at Glenbard East
School district will partner with Park District of Lombard and Glenbard East Boosters to pay for the turf.
Soon all four Glenbard High Schools will have turf fields.
The Glenbard Township High School District 87 Board of Education approved an intergovernmental plan to authorize the bid process to find a contractor to install artificial turf at the Glenbard East High School athletic stadium, the last of the four high schools slated for turf.
The school district, along with the Park District of Lombard which approved financial support for the project last week, will work with the Glenbard East boosters to finance the project.
The turf project is expected to have a price tag of approximately $1.36 million. If lights are to be added, the cost would increase to about $1.65 million, according to data provided by the school district. The projected costs are split between the school district and park district, which each pledge up to $500,000 in funding. The remaining funds are to be paid by the booster club, but not to exceed $433,333.
To pay its share of the project, the school district will issue $800,000 worth of bonds with a yearly debt service of $120,000. District officials expect to pay the bonds off within eight years.
Partnering with an outside government agency to fund an artificial turf project is not new for District 87 officials. In 2008, the school district worked with other government agencies to install artificial turf at all four Glenbard High Schools. In 2009, the district entered into an agreement with the Carol Stream Park District to install turf at Glenbard North High School.
The Glenbard East stadium is within the boundaries of the Lombard Park District and will be able to be used by the park district when not in use by the school. A master use schedule will be created annually prior to Jan. 1 of each year of the agreement, according to the mutual-use agreement.
Construction is expected to be completed for use during the 2012-2013 school year.
