Dear District 41 families,

In the last few weeks, we've heard from many parents, students and teachers with various points of view regarding the Board of Education's (BOE) decision to remove the novel "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" from classrooms at Hadley. This book had been available for eighth graders as a choice for independent reading. I want to let you know that the administration has gone back to work on this matter in the hopes of finding an approach that preserves choice of reading matter and strengthens parent partnership and responsibility in that choice. I expect that we will have a revised recommendation to bring before the BOE at the May 28 BOE meeting for discussion; I anticipate that the BOE would take action on the revised recommendation no sooner than the June 10 meeting.

I can't say at this time what the revised recommendation will be nor can I predict what action the BOE may choose to take. I can say that the voices and perspectives shared by our constituents have been measured and thoughtful, and have been appreciated by the BOE members and staff.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ann Riebock, Superintendent
