Stealing Culture Was Subject of Art Institute Associates May Event
Over 200 members of the Glen Ellyn Wheaton Community Associates of the Art Institute settled in their chairs at the Abbington Banquet in Glen Ellyn as they prepared to hear about the phenomenon of “The Looting of Iraq’s Past.” This lecture and power point program was presented by archeologist, Katharyn Hanson, from the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. The audience was amazed to learn about the thefts of artifacts from Iraq over the past years.
This region of the world has produced masterpieces of architecture and art over thousands of years. Why are archaeological sites and museums looted? Who profits from this plunder? What had been done to stop looting? What can we do in the future? The program for the afternoon educated guests and members about this serious problem that exists between countries and cultures.
The Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Community Associates welcomes guests’ attendance at their Abbington luncheons. This is an opportunity for DuPage County residents to learn about the special programs provided through membership and affiliation with the Art Institute of Chicago.
